–Carl R. Rogers
Thanks to the outdated depiction of therapy in movies and television,
the thought of psychotherapy evokes an intimidating image:
...a cold office filled with books and hardwood furniture...
...a vulnerable client lying on the couch nervously sharing their darkest secrets...
...and the silent therapist disregarding everything you said just to flatly suggest...
"...But how does that make you feel?"
Yikes.
How does that make me feel...?
I can't help but feel discouraged and frustrated
for anyone who has the courage to seek help and is met with that kind of disconnect.
How's that for some emotional awareness, Freud?
The cooperative working relationship between a client and their therapist, known as the therapeutic alliance, is an incredibly important part of setting the foundation for effective therapeutic work.
In fact, evidence points to the
therapeutic relationship as the biggest predictor of success
in mental health treatment.
With over a decade of experience working with trauma survivors in their homes, sometimes through their greatest struggles, I came to deeply appreciate the power of vulnerability and humility, while honing essential skills to support my clients success in achieving their goals.
The context of our lives lends to internalized messages we carry with us about what is good or bad, right or wrong. I believe internalized negative messages are a part of what prevents us from becoming our authentic, fulfilled selves. Therefore earnest human connections are a necessary foundation for positive change.
